Steve Jobs Dead at 56 [apple]

When I wrote “Fare Thee Well Steve Jobs” expressing my concern for the state of his health and that of the company he founded, I never imagined that within twenty-four hours he would be deceased. Yet here we are. You will be sorely missed, but your contributions will never be forgotten. I’m frankly feeling a little sick over this. We’ve all lost a member of our families this night, a man who inserted himself into our lives whether we liked him or not, and changed them for the better whether we wanted him to or not. Not much else to say, so I’ll let Apple’s Board of Directors do the talking for us all:

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.

Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

Coverage by MacWorld and the New York Times is extensive, and well worth a visit, as is the memorial page hosted by Apple.

Goodbye for now, Steve. See you on the other side.
